Judge Glenda Hatchett spoke about overcoming the biggest struggle in her life at the first annual “Pretty in Pinstripes” Power Luncheon and awards held at the Camelot by Martins on Sat, 21. Standing proudly the Judge served as keynote speaker and delivered an emotional speech about discovering passion and empowering women to over 200 people. “My grandfather passed away from a heart attack several years ago. That was the most difficult thing I had to go through. People will always run into hurdles, it’s all a matter of how high you are willing to jump to overcome them,” said Hatchett.In observance of National Women’s History Month Jarrett Affairs & Productions recognized rich history struggles of women whose leadership skills, persistence and hard work set new standards for women everywhere according to Sharon P. Jarrett, president and CEO of JAP. The event was several years in the making, with a goal to collaborate with women making remarkable strides in the business community. “We as women often miss opportunities to maximize our collective power that could potentially propel us to even greater success,” said Jarrett. Hatchet reinforced pursing a passion and continuing a generational relay that would place her in the syndicated “Judge Glenda Hatchett show”. In her speech she mentioned the impact of a special woman named Mother Duncan who placed four silver dollars in a folded napkin presented it to Hatchet prior her first day of college. “The money she gave wasn’t much. However it was a symbol for me to continue a generational relay, so I just kept running,” said Hatchet. Mother Duncan never finished elementary however gave the money to her as a source of inspiration to continue a family legacy according to Hatchett. “Women need to encourage each other. And also need men in their lives that will empower them. I pay tribute to women, whose struggled paved the way for me and will never be recognized,” said Hatchett. Women make up more than 45 percent of the U.S. workforce, yet less than twenty fortunate 500 companies. Moreover, women-owned businesses continue to grow at a fast rate than any other small business and continue to face challenges including access to capital, networking and financing according to Jarrett. The event also honored the first ever “Exceptional Women in Business and Government Awards”, Delegate Jill P. Carter of the Maryland General Assembly’s 41st Legislative District, First lady Leslie E. Johnson, wife of Prince Georges County Executive Jack B. Johnson, Desiree Callender Real Estate Professional in Prince Georges County, Lillian B. Holt Agency field executive for State Farm insurance and Ronika Christol Williams Cosmetologist professional all received awards for their work in the community. “These women collectively inspire us all to push the envelope and excel and expand our personal networks across industries and experience level,” said Jarrett.
